PERMIT REQUIREMENTS
To apply for an instruction permit you have to be at least 15 1/2, complete a driver education course, and take to a DMV office these documents:

BLUE CERTIFICATE (sometimes it's pink and is also known as OL-237). We will send it to you, this is your proof of completion of Driver Education.

WHITE CERTIFICATE also known as OL-392. We will send it to you if you reside within the San Diego County, if not you can get one from any driving school in your area. This certificate means that you are enrolled in driver training, ready to start your behind the wheel.

Completed APPLICATION (DL-44). Has to be signed by your parent(s).

SOCIAL SECURITY CARD or just the number.

Pay the application fee - $27.00

When you present these documents they will give you a written test. You have three chances to pass it. You will get your permit and your picture taken the day you pass. (There are 46 questions on the test. A passing score is at least 39 correct answers. You have three chances to pass the test. If you fail, you must wait 7 days before taking it again).
Note: You do not need an appointment and you can go to the DMV by yourself.
Note: If you are at least 17 ½ you may obtain a permit without completing DE/DT. However, to get a license before you are 18 years old, you must provide proof of DE/DT completion.
